A tradition in dining culture
The world of decanters
Enjoyment of the finer things in life is at the heart of any sophisticated dining culture, reflecting a blend of tradition and innovation. The history of the decanter, used since the 18th century as an artistically decorated vessel for serving wine, reflects a cultural evolution.
The original focus was aesthetics rather than the perfect shape to bring out a wine’s full flavour. A pure glass design was, however, important to emphasise the beautiful colour of the wine.
Over the years, decanters have become a symbol of elegance and hospitality and with our decanters and carafes we are seeking to pay tribute to this tradition.
Expert decanting
A guide for wine lovers
Selecting the perfect receptacle for wine is a science in itself and significantly influences the tasting experience.
From deciding between a decanter and a wine carafe to choosing the perfect container for young or mature wine, or white or red varieties – every detail counts.
The ability to select the ideal receptacle for each wine or drink will make the difference between a good and an exceptional tasting experience.
The perfect decanter for each bouquet
Decanting clearly illustrates that wines are far more complex than simply red or white varieties. This is reflected in the range of Villeroy & Boch decanters, which consider not only the colour, but all the characteristics of the wine.
Complex bouquets, described by sommeliers as masculine, need more oxygen to reveal their full flavour before tasting. Generously proportioned red wine carafes are ideal for this as they provide a large surface for aeration.
In contrast, these decanters can cause the fine aromas of delicate, ‘feminine’ wines to evaporate and detract from their velvety taste. Decanters for wines such as Bordeaux and Pinot Noir therefore have a more slender shape designed to preserve and protect the bouquet.
From full-bodied red wine to delicate white wine or smooth whisky – there is a perfect decanter for every bouquet.
Red wine decanters
Red wines are decanted differently depending on the type of wine and its age. For young, high-tannin red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Bordeaux, decanting helps to soften the tannins and bring out their complexity. An aeration time of one and a half to two hours is recommended to reveal their full character. Lighter red wines such as Pinot Noir can be left for just one hour in the decanter. More mature reds require more gentle aeration of no more than 30 minutes to preserve their delicate aromas and avoid over-oxidation.
White wine decanters
Decanting white wines, in particular fuller bodied varieties such as Chardonnay or a mature Riesling, can enhance the aroma and taste. White and rosé wines also benefit from a short decanting period, ideally around 30 minutes. One hour of aeration can refine the taste of younger wines. Over-refrigeration can impair the aroma, so a little courage is required to explore a new ways to appreciate white wines.
Whisky decanters
Decanting whisky is a simple and sophisticated step that improves the aroma and taste. A rest period of 30 minutes allows the whisky to develop its aromas and sediments to settle. Choose an airtight decanter to prevent evaporation and keep the whisky fresh.
