SPARKLING WINE OR CHAMPAGNE

Champagne is the celebratory drink of choice. Champagne is a sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France. It is subject to strict production criteria and can only use the name when it is manufactured within a designated zone, using only hand picked grapes and according to the “méthode champenoise”, a special method of fermentation in a bottle. Classic champagne only uses 3 grape varieties and is sealed with natural cork.

Sparkling wine now refers to all high-quality fizzy wines that are not allowed to call themselves champagne. But this does not mean that sparkling wine is worse than champagne. Sparkling wines are produced using the same bottle fermentation method as champagne. So, when you treat yourself to a Vin Mousseux or Crémant in France, a Cava in Spain, a Spumante Metodo Classico in Italy or a vintner’s sparkling wine in Germany (Winzersekt) or Austria (Hauersekt) – the quality is always the same.

Have you ever wondered what Brut or Brut de Brut stands for? The technical term is “dosage” and each champagne producer has their own secret recipe. It is added to the champagne before it is corked and gives the champagne its special taste, from very dry to sweet. The different terms reveal the amount of sugar remaining in the sparkling wine.

Brut Nature (Brut Zéro, Brut de Brut, Brut Sauvage, Ultra Brut, Pas Dosé, Dosage Zero, Naturherb): less than 3 grammes of residual sugar per litre. No dosage is added to the finished sparkling wine.

Extra Brut (Extra Herb): less than 6 grammes per litre.

Brut (Bruto, Herb): less than 12 grammes per litre – the standard for dry sparkling wine.

Extra Dry (Très Sec, Extra Secco, Extra Seco, Extra Trocken): less than 20 grammes per litre.

Sec (Secco, Seco, Dry, Trocken): less than 35 grammes per litre.

Demi-Sec (Semisecco, Abbocato, Semi Seco, Medium Dry, Halbtrocken): less than 50 grammes per litre.

Doux (Dolce, Dulce, Sweet, Süß): more than 50 grammes per litre.
